Introduction to Living Biblical Hebrew (Units 1–2)

With the course, Introduction to Living Biblical Hebrew, you begin your journey into the language of the Hebrew Bible.

Natural language learning

As a human, you were created to learn languages, and your mind is naturally wired to pick up a language in a unique way. This course is designed to teach you the Hebrew of the Bible in this natural way so that you can absorb the language quickly and remember it for life. It’s important to relax and have fun. You will hear Hebrew and understand what it means from visual cues and contexts. Make sure you resist translating in your mind. Try to accept the Hebrew, the sounds you hear, directly, and connect it to what you see, just as a child would.

The Bible contains around 8,000 words, which is not the full language of the time. Since not every word of the language was recorded in the Bible, some words are “missing”. In this course, some words describing the language forms, particularly grammatical terms, have been filled in with later Hebrew dialects, but be assured that all the content of the readings, texts and exercises is Hebrew from the Bible.

Most activities are intended for you to repeat. Bear in mind that all the content will continue to be repeated and reviewed in various contexts throughout the course, so if you are understanding the gist of things and are able to respond appropriately, that is enough to continue to the next activity. There will be assessments to help you know that you are ready to move on.

Picture Lessons:

You will see pictures and hear the Hebrew word twice. Listen through to the whole lesson without stopping. At the end, take a five-minute break, then  listen through again. In some lessons, you may even listen through a third time if you like. Make sure to listen through each segment without stopping or repeating words out loud. This actually helps your mind absorb better; you will hear the sounds and understand more clearly the second time round.

Action Videos:

You will watch a teacher instructing students to do certain actions. By hearing and seeing their response, you will be learning with the group. Listen through the whole video without pausing. After a brief break, you may listen through again. Following the video there will be activities in which you can check and practice what you have learned.

Navigating around the course

Hebrew is written from right to left, and the course material is oriented in the right to left direction where possible.

  • Hebrew text will be displayed in right to left orientation.
  • Numbers are shown and read left to right.
  • The left arrow on the interactive screens will take you to the NEXT screen. The right arrow on the interactive screens will take you to the PREVIOUS screen.
  • Some of the interactive exercises have simple audio instructions in Hebrew. As you work through the course, you will recognize familiar commands. For exercises where the instruction might be new to you, we have included a simple “explainer” video to help you understand how to complete the activity.

Remember, to learn a new language successfully, you need to allow yourself to discover, explore, and make mistakes. This is a healthy part of the process. We invite you to dive into Hebrew, splash around, and be amazed as you start to swim.

Enjoy!
